The challenge
Middle Tennessee gets hot, humid summers, plenty of rain and the occasional severe storm. Moisture is the main enemy of wood, and clay soil that swells and shrinks can loosen posts.
How the materials compare
- Pressure-treated pine: affordable, but needs sealing and good drainage at the base
- Cedar: more rot-resistant and attractive, at a higher price
- Vinyl: won't rot; may need occasional washing for mildew
- Aluminum: won't rust, very low maintenance, but not a privacy fence
- Coated chain link: durable and affordable, with little upkeep
Build details that matter
Whatever material you pick, the build matters. Posts set deep in concrete with a sloped top, pickets kept off the soil and good gate framing all help a fence survive storms and wet seasons.
The bottom line
For low maintenance, vinyl or aluminum are hard to beat. For a classic look on a budget, wood still works well if it's built and maintained right.
